Personal work.
It is a very important part of being a photographer. It helps boost our creativity, and continues our learning progression. When I am creating photos just for myself I can push my boundaries, experiment, think out of the box, and do things I wouldn’t want to do while on the job.
Making time for personal work can be difficult at times…
Recently I have been so busy from photographing a child’s 1st birthday party to a 100 year old great grandfather’s birthday/ family reunion, and I even traveled all the way to the Dominican Republic to shoot a destination wedding!
All that was great and I loved every minute of it, but I definitely was missing creating just for fun. So I took a couple hours off one night and created this self portrait…
This photo is titled “Emerging from Darkness.”
I wanted to capture a darker mood, but also have an optimistic feel to it. The message I was going for was that you might be in a sad, unhappy, or angry mood and point in your life. But that is temporary. You will emerge from this darkness and into the light. All it takes is time but one day you will feel better and enjoy the lightness of life. Sometimes it just takes darkness for you to be able to see the light, so open your eyes and let the light in.
Even just these couple hours I spent working on this photo felt great, reinvigorated my creativity, cleared and focused my mind.
After completing my 365 project I took a break from creating photos everyday. That left a creative void in my life. I missed not creating a unique composition everyday. I was planning on starting my project “Full Deck” but after the unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign, that project had to go on the back burner as I wouldn’t be able to put as much time, energy, and money into it without the Kickstarter backing. By back burner I mean it’s my super secret side project that I am still working on.The project might not be as grand as I was originally thinking, and may take longer than I planned, but it will happen! I won’t be sharing the photos just yet… but once I feel the time is right I will begin to showcase my “Full Deck” project!
Until then you will just have to follow me on all of the social media sites to see what I am up to!
I regularly post to my Instagram account, so if you want to see just for fun photos I take with my phone follow me @LeeGPhoto
