Location | Boston, MA
It’s that time of year again. With the 2016 wedding season all wrapped up, I cleared my schedule for the day and went down to Boston, MA to create some fashion portraits. I collaborated with Alex, a makeup artist, and model for a fashion shoot. We were going for an edgy feel and Alex really brought out that feeling with her makeup design and outfit. Throughout the day, we walked all over Boston — about 8 miles in total, finding a bunch of hidden gems.
The first time I went to the Boston Public Library I knew that I wanted to take photos of a model there. So that is where we began. We explored the many rooms of the library, taking in the amazing architecture of the building. We made sure to be very quiet as we were photographing — it was a good thing that Alex was good at reading all of my hand gestures as I was helping her get into the poses that I was looking for. The interior courtyard made for a great location for creating images. The giant columns, tiled floors, and soft light filtering in completed the compositions. I could have stayed in the library for hours creating images, but alas it was just about closing time, and we had much more of the city to explore before the evening closed in.
We headed out from the library, down Boylston St. through the Boston Public Gardens and crisscrossed up and down so many streets and alleys all through Boston. Eventually, we ended up at the Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park. By that time it was really starting to get dark, so we figured we should probably start heading back to where we parked the car. But before then we created one last image. In just about pitch darkness we walked past the New England Aquarium and there was this brushed metallic structure. I knew I wanted to incorporate that into a composition somehow, even though it was completely dark out. I saw how reflective the surface was and I figured I would be able to use that surface as a reflector if I bounced my flash into the wall. As I was just about to take the photo a gust of wind blew Alex’s hair — I snapped that one frame. Perfect timing.
That made for a great end to a very fun day in Boston.
