Location | Boston Public Garden, Boston, MA
I photographed Liz and Mike in Boston, MA — my first engagement session in the beautiful New England city. Beginning in the Public Garden and progressing to the Charles River Esplanade, we enjoyed the sights on a hot albeit breezy summer’s day. The Boston Public Garden has countless dynamic locations to photograph engagements and weddings. I could shoot there a hundred times and barely scratch the surface of all it has to offer.
I loved the varieties of trees, the water, the crowds of people in the Garden: each providing me with elements to add to the compositions. While trees and water are commonplace in most of my session locations, crowds are less so. The challenge of using people in their daily life as a compositional element, oblivious to my motives and unmoved by my intentions, was an adventure to say the least. With a little perseverance, we found ways to make the crowd a part of an intimate moment in some photographs and entirely nonexistent in others.
After exploring the Garden, we made our way to the Esplanade. I was excited to create images by the water, with the cityscape in the background and the river stretching in front of us. The bridges that cross the Storrow Lagoon provided unique compositional opportunities for super-wide environmental and architectural portraits.
This session was a refreshing challenge. I enjoyed working with Liz and Mike; I enjoyed creating images in a new environment, mixing urban and natural. I’m happy with the array of images we captured, from intimate moments under a sweeping willow tree to smiles on a brick-lined street.
We are all thrilled to celebrate Liz and Mike’s wedding this September on the top of Stowe Mountain in Vermont!
I hope you enjoy Liz and Mike’s Engagement session!
How long have you been together?
We have been together for 4 years.
Tell us how you first met.
We met 4 years ago this month in Boston at the restaurant Post 390. Post 390 is now a restaurant we go for special occasions because it’s where we met over a couple of beers and good conversation.
When did you get engaged?
We got engaged in January of this year on vacation on the island of Maui in Hawaii.
Tell us about the proposal.
It was on a secluded/quiet beach after we went on a morning hike. Mike pulled the ring out of his backpack that he carried around all day :) Hawaii is a special place to me because I used to live there right after college so it was even more meaningful he proposed there. The beach he proposed in was in the town of Kapalua.
